What we do out of the office..
We all have lives outside the office, weird that sometimes you can work with someone for a very long time and over a coffee you find out stuff that is totally new….We have a very limited marketing budget and sometimes it’s just great what a small sponsoring can do. This is a few of the activities we sponsor apart from the pure professional ones were we sponsor different OSS initiatives.
An abnormal number of our technical staff are all devoted to para shooting.. so we are currently sponsoring the Devine Freefly Team Check out there site – it’s some serious jumping!!

Launch of op5 Monitor 4.0
Yesterday was a real exciting day as we launched our 4th major release of op5 Monitor. There are lots of news hidden in this release. Some of them are obvius as they add new functionallity but a lot has happened in the backend. This is allways a real challange when it comes to informing about the new stuff in the system as a lot of it actually don´t show for the user. In this case the big news is that we now integrate Nagios v3.0 as our back end engine to Monitor 4.0. We are the first ITOM / OSS vendor to do this and obviusly we are very happy about this.
One feature that is now supported adds a long awaited function: flexible time periods. This is a critical feature when you really want to use the system in a support organisation and for professional Service level reports.

Why logs are the greatest gift to IT?
Read a really weired article today (Swedish in Computer Sweden) It’s basically boils down that as logs are just so many – then trow them away as it becomes to hard to manage.
I think that is totally wrong, at least until you know what you are throwing away. It reminds me of a friend who is great “throw away” person. His grandmother had just past away and he was the who should move out her stuff from her apartment. He threw nearly everything away – to make a long story short, we managed to save some stuff from the garbage container, took to an art dealer and we got more then 30.000$ for the “garbage”. Point being – before you throw things away make sure you know what it is!
Logs are great – but you need to learn about it.

An early day in Gothenburg
So – back again after a full day in Gothenburg were we together with IFS, an ERP vendor hosted a breakfast seminar. Topic of the day was centered around the fact that the ERP systems including IFS are undergoing a major change. From being hosted on sometimes a single AS/400 they are today a mesh of hw and software with a flora of OS, databases etc. But in the monitoring world they are still very proprietary. So we have initiated a couple of development project, primerly with IFS & Lawson (Movex). The general idea from our side is to create a generic set of plugins/checks that can determent the status of a IFS or M3 system. By then grouping this information with other relevant monitoring data it just makes the availability greater and what can be a better ROI then a perfectly working ERP system. (more…)

Trying to create som debate in the press
Found myself in the press
that’s always a surprise. I was reading an article about some of the different so called standards that we are now seeing. Things like ITIL, PCI, Eurosox etc. My point is that a lot of these standards are written for large to very large organizations. However (more…)

Ok – here we go…a little bit about Vmware ESX monitoring
You might not know this but op5 Monitor, is based on Nagios as the underlying engine. So the good news with our ESX plugin is GPL licensed and as such you can directly use it if you are a Nagios user. If you want to down load it, check out our projects.
Details about the plugin: http://www.op5.com/support/list-of-plugins?plugin=operating_systems:check_esx3
