Green – a nice color!
November 24, 2008
Everybody and everywhere everything is now turning green… Don´t get me wrong – I like green and I like “the environmental”. But hey there got to be limits to the BS some companies produce. My bank for example SEB have some really nice webpages explaining how good they are… this is the same bank that sends me 4-6 different envelops on the same day from the same bank (from different departments of the bank)?? How hard can it be to coordinate this?
Another thing that I have put some thought in to is environmental cars…Again really fat full coaler micro books gets sent to my home telling me about all great things with a “green car”. Now here are my thought: today I drive a 3 year old Audi that according to it’s papers pollute with 239mg of Co2. Now a so called green car will produce 120mg Co2. My question to this is obvious how much Co2 does it take to build a car, transport it to Sweden and make it ready for me to drive? I don´t have the answer – but I am sure we are talking about many many kg of Co2. I would really like the automakers to give me a direct answer so I can calculate the real number i.e. how many miles will I have to drive my new green car before I really become green? This calculation is based on that my current car is taken off the streets when I get my new one – that’s not going to happen as I will sell it and someone else will drive it for at least another 5-10 years…
My green alternative would be more toward that I drive my car another 5 years. At the same time the green technology will evolve immensely and then I will change car and my old car get’s taken from the streets forever. Would this be a much greener calculation? But hey – then we would buy new cars and a lot of people will be laid off and as they are not going to work maybe that will spend there days driving around…. and that was the end of this theory…
Just to wrap up – I really do not like companies that so obvious market green stuff without any content..

I agree it would be interesting to find out the complete co2 footprint of your car. Unfortunately I don’t think the auto industry itself has any incentive at all to provide this…
Not an answer two your car question but just another approach: http://www.betterplace.com/
I love the brilliance of this project from many aspects and hope it will succeed!
